Each round shows you a historical photo of Sydney. First, drop a pin on the map where you think the photo was taken. Then, use the slider to guess what year it was captured. After submitting your guess, you'll see how close you were and how you compare to other players.

Placemark features over 100 curated historical photos of Sydney spanning from 1850 to 2020. Photos include landmarks, streetscapes, events, and everyday scenes from different eras. We source photos from archives like Wikimedia Commons and provide attribution for each image.

Your score is based on two factors: how close your location guess is to the actual spot, and how close your year guess is to the actual date. Each photo can have slightly different scoring weights. Your total score places you in a percentile ranking compared to all other players who have guessed on that photo.

Placemark requires an internet connection to load photos and submit guesses. The photos are streamed from our servers rather than stored on your device to save space. We recommend playing on Wi-Fi for the best experience.

After you submit a guess, we compare your score to all previous guesses on that photo. If you're in the 80th percentile, that means you scored better than 80% of players. Rankings update in real-time as more people play.

The historical photos come from various sources, primarily Wikimedia Commons and public archives. Each photo is used under its specific license (Creative Commons, public domain, etc.) and includes attribution information. We don't claim ownership of the historical images.

No account is needed. Your game history is stored locally on your device. This means your progress won't sync between devices, but it also means we don't collect any personal information from you.
